Dec 1 Then Pilate wanted to free him, but the Jews shouted, “If you free him, you’re not Caesar’s friend. Whoever makes himself king opposes Caesar.” Hearing this, Pilate brought Jesus out. He sat down on the judge’s seat in a place called The Pavement. It was about noon on the day of preparation for the Passover. Pilate said, “Behold your king!” They shouted, “Away, away and crucify him!”
“Crucify your king?” Pilate asked.
“Our only king is Caesar,” the chief priests answered.
Fearing a riot and sensing futility, he took water and washed his hands before them, saying, “I’m innocent of this man’s blood. It’s your responsibility!” The people answered, “His blood be on us and our children.”8 Pilate wanting to please them freed Barabbas, and after flogging Jesus, delivered Jesus to them to be crucified.
