8.4 Jesus Is The Light of the World

Jun 18 8.4 Again Jesus addressed the people, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me1 won’t walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Pharisees said, “Your witness isn’t true because you witness about yourself.”
Jesus replied, “Even though I do, my witness is true for I know where I’m from and where I’m going, which you don’t know. You judge carnally, but I don’t judge anyone. If I judge, my judgment is true because I’m not alone, the Father who sent me is with me.
Your law says two people’s testimony is valid. Both I and the Father who sent me testify about me.” They asked him, “Where is your Father?”
Jun 19 “You don’t know either of us,” Jesus replied, “for if you knew me, you would know Him.” He taught this near the treasury in the temple. Yet he wasn’t arrested because his time had not come.2
Jesus continued, “I’m going away. You will look for me but you will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come.” The religious populace asked, “What does he mean by, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?3 Will he kill himself?”
He continued, “You are from this world below, I’m from above and not of this world. That’s why I said you’ll die in your sin, unless you believe that I am He.” “Who are you?” they asked.
Jun 20 He replied, “Just who I said initially. I’ve much to say and judge about you. He who sent me is true,4 and what I have heard from him I tell the world.” They never understood that he spoke to them about his Father, God.
So Jesus said, “When you lift5 up the Son of man, then you’ll know that I am He. I do nothing on my own, but I speak as the Father taught me.6 He sent me and is with me for I always do what pleases Him.”
As he spoke, many believed in him. Jesus said to those who believed, “If you continue trusting my word, you are truly my disciples. Then you’ll know the truth and it will set you free.” They answered, “We are Abraham’s seed and never have been enslaved. How can you say that we’ll be set free?”
Jun 21 Jesus answered, “Truly, anyone who sins is a slave of sin. A slave has no permanency in a home, unlike a son. So if the Son frees you, you are free indeed.
I know you are Abraham’s seed, yet you want to kill me, because my word is repulsive to you. I tell you what I’ve seen in the Father’s presence, as you do what you’ve heard from your own father.” They replied, “Abraham is our father.”7 Jesus said, “If he were, you would do what he did. But you want to kill me, I who told you the truth which I heard from God. That Abraham never did. You are doing what your own father did.” They replied, “We aren’t bastards, God is our Father.”
Jun 22 Jesus said, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God. I haven’t come on my own, He sent me. Why don’t you understand? Because you cannot bear my message! Your father is the devil, and you do what pleases him. From the beginning he was a murderer, he can’t stand the truth and has no truth in him. So he’s a natural liar and the father of lies. Hence, you do not believe the truth I speak. Who of you convicts me of sin? He who belongs to God hears His words, but you don’t, because you are not His.” The religious populace answered, “Aren’t we correct in saying that you are a Samaritan and are demon-possessed?”
Jun 23 Jesus said, “I’m not demon-possessed, I honor my Father and you dishonor me. I don’t seek my own glory, but there is One who seeks it and judges. Truly, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” The religious populace replied, “Now we know you have a demon. Abraham and the prophets died, yet you say anyone who keeps your word won’t die. Are you greater than father Abraham and the prophets who died? Who do you think you are?”
Jun 24 Jesus replied, “Glorifying myself8 would mean nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, glorifies me. You don’t know Him, but I do and keep His word. If I say I don’t, I would be a liar like you. Abraham your father rejoiced that he was to see my day, he saw it and was glad.”9 The religious populace asked, “You under fifty, have seen Abraham?”
Jesus replied, “Before Abraham was, I AM.”
