Aug 31 9.22 James and John, led by their mother, knelt and said, “Teacher, grant us a special request.”
Jesus said, “What can I do for you?” They replied, “Grant us two to sit, one at your right and the other at your left in glory,” Jesus said, “You don’t know what you are asking, can you drink of my cup or share in my baptism?”1 They replied, “We can.”
Jesus said, “You will drink of my cup and share in my baptism. But to sit on my right and on my left is for whoever my Father prepared them, and not mine to grant.” Hearing this, the other ten were angry with James and John.
Sep 1 But Jesus, calling them together, said, “You know earthly rulers lord it over their subjects, and their great ones wield authority.2 It must not be so with you. Whoever wants to be the greatest among you must be your slave, and whoever wants to be the first must be servant3 of all. Even the Son of man didn’t come to be served, but to serve and give his life a ransom4 for many.”
