7.5 Jesus Is the Bread of Life

7.5 The next morning, the crowd remaining on the opposite shore discovered Jesus absence. They were surprised, because they had seen the disciples leave without him in the only boat there. Boarding several small boats from Tiberias beached near the place where they ate the bread which the Lord blessed, they went by boat across to Capernaum for Jesus. On finding him they asked, “Teacher, when did you come here?”

May 10 Jesus replied, “Truly, you look for me because I fed you and not because of the miracles you saw. Dont work for perishable food, but for eternal food which the Son of man will give you. For God the Father has set His approval seal on him.” They asked Jesus, “How do we do Gods work?” Jesus answered, “Gods work1 is to believe on him whom He sent.” They asked him, “What sign2 can you give us so that we may believe you? Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, it is written, He gave them heavenly bread to eat.

Jesus replied, Truly, it wasnt Moses who gave you heavenly bread. My Father gives you the true heavenly bread, for Gods bread is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They replied, “Lord, give us this bread from now on.”

May 11 Jesus replied, I am the bread of life. Anyone who comes to me and believes in me will neither hunger nor thirst. Though youve seen me, you dont believe. Everyone the Father gives me will come to me and I wont turn any away, for Ive come from heaven to do only the Fathers will. This is His will,3 that I lose none of those He has given me, but raise these up on the last day. His will is that everyone, who looks to the Son and believes in him, shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

May 12 Because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven,” the religious populace murmured: How can he say “Ive come from heaven.” Isnt this Josephs4 son whose parents we know?

Jesus said, “Stop murmuring! No one comes to me  unless the Father who sent me draws him, and Ill raise him up on the last day. The prophets wrote, Theyll all be taught by God. Everyone who has heard and learnt from the Father comes to me. No one but His emissary5 has seen the Father. Truly, I say, every believer has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate manna in the desert and died. I am the living bread from heaven, anyone who eats this bread will live forever. The bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” The religious populace argued among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

May 13 Jesus told them, “Truly, I say, unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of man, you have no life. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and Ill raise him up on the last day. My flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. Whoever eats and drinks both, remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of Him, so whoever feeds on me will live6 because of me. I am the heavenly bread, not such as your ancestors ate and then died. One who eats this bread will live forever.” Jesus spoke this in the synagogue in Capernaum. Many disciples hearing grumbled, “Who can accept such hard teaching?”

May 14 Knowing their grumblings, Jesus said, “Does this offend you? What if you see the Son ascend to where he was before?7 The Spirit gives life, the flesh gives nothing. My words are spirit and life, yet some of you dont believe.” Jesus knew those disbelieving and the betrayer. He continued, “This is why I said no one can come to me unless the Father so granted him.” Since then, many of his disciples left him. Jesus asked the twelve, “Will you also go?” Peter answered, “Go to whom, Lord? You have the words of eternal life. We know and believe that you are Gods Holy One.”

May 15 Jesus replied, “Havent I chosen you twelve? Yet among you is a devil.”(He meant Judas Iscariot, who later betrayed him.)
