May 2 6.44 Opportunity came on Herods birthday when he gave a banquet for his nobles, commanders and Galilean chiefs. Herodias daughter danced before Herod and his guests, pleasing them so much that he said to her, “Ask anything from me and Ill grant it.” He swore, “Ill give you whatever you ask, up to half of my kingdom.” She went out and asked her mother, “What shall I ask?” She answered, “John the Baptists head.” The girl immediately told the king, “I want John the Baptists head on a dish right now.” The king was very sorry, but because of his oath and the guests, he could not refuse. So he sent an executioner to bring Johns head. The man went, beheaded John,1 brought his head on a dish, gave it to the girl, who gave it to her mother.

May 3 When Johns disciples heard the news, they came for his body, buried it, then reported to Jesus, who on hearing it, withdrew by boat to a desert place privately.
