Dec 2 14.1 Taking him into the palace courtyard, they gathered the entire battalion of soldiers. They replaced the purple with a red robe, crowned him with plaited thorns and handed him a staff. They struck his head with a staff, spat on him and, in mock worship, knelt saying, “Hail, king of Jews.” Tired of their sport, they replaced the scarlet with his own clothes and led him, carrying his own cross for crucifixion.

A passerby from Cyrene, Simon, father of Alexander and Rufus, was forced to help carry his cross.
