11.21 Jesus' Farewell Discussion

11.21 “Don’t let your heart be troubled.1 Believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many mansions. I would tell you if it weren’t so. I’m going to prepare a place for you, and I will come for you so that you will always be wherever I am. You know the way to where I am going.”
Oct 28 Thomas said, “Lord, we don’t know your destination or the way there.”
Jesus replied, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, no one comes to the Father except through me. If you knew me, you would know my Father also. From now on you know him and have seen him.” Philip said, “Show us the Father and that will satisfy us.”
Jesus said, “I’ve been so long with you Philip, yet you do not know me! Having seen me, you’ve seen the Father. Why say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe I am in the Father, and the Father is in me?2 I don’t speak these words to you on my own, the Father in me is He who is doing His work.3 Believe these statements; otherwise, believe me because of the works. Truly, whoever believes in me will do the works I do and even greater works, because I’m going to my Father. To glorify4 the Father in the Son, I will do whatever you ask and anything you ask me in my name.
Oct 29 If you love me, you will obey my commandments. I will ask the Father and He will give you another Comforter,5 the Spirit of truth, to be with you forever. Him the world cannot receive, because it neither sees6 nor knows Him; but you know Him because He lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphaned, I will come to you. Soon the world won’t see me, but you will. Because I live, you will too. You will know then that I am in the Father, you are in me and I am in you. Whoever obeys my commandments, loves me, and will be loved by my Father. And I will love him and reveal myself to him.”
Oct 30 Judas7 (not Iscariot) asked, “Lord, why are you going to reveal yourself to us and not the world?”
Jesus replied, “Whoever loves me will obey my words. My Father will love him, and we will come and live with him. Whoever doesn’t love me, won’t obey my words. These words aren’t mine, but my Father’s. I’ve said this while I’m with you, but when the Father sends the Holy Spirit in my name, He will teach you and remind you of all that I told you. Peace I leave with you. My peace I give you, I give you unlike the world gives. Don’t be afraid or troubled8 in your heart.
Oct 31 You heard me say I’m leaving, then returning. If you love me, you’ll rejoice that I’m going to the Father, He is greater than I. I’ve told you this beforehand, so when it occurs you’ll believe. I cannot talk with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has nothing in me, but so that the world knows I love the Father, I do everything the Father tells me.9 Rise let’s go.”
“I am the true Vine. My Father, the Gardener, removes every unfruitful branch, and prunes every fruitful branch so it will bear more fruit. You are already pruned through my teaching. Live in me and I will live in you. A branch must remain in the vine to bear fruit. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
Nov 1 I am the Vine: you are the branches. He who lives in me, and I in him, bears much fruit. Without me you can do nothing. One who doesn’t live in me is removed, dried, gathered and burned. If you live in me and my words live in you, ask what you wish and it will be granted. By bearing much fruit, you will glorify my Father and prove to be my disciples.
I have loved you as the Father has loved me.10 Live in my love. You will, if you obey my commands, just as I’ve obeyed my Father’s commands and live in His love. I’ve told you this, that my joy may be in you and fill up your joy.
Nov 2 My command is this: Love one another as I have loved you. The greatest love is shown by giving one’s life for friends. You are my friends, if you obey me. I won’t call you servants again, for a servant doesn’t know the master’s plans. I call you friends, because everything I learned from the Father I’ve told you. You didn’t choose me, but I chose you to go and bear lasting fruit. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.
This is my command: Love one another.
If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. If you are of the world, it would love you. Because I called you and you no longer are of the world, it hates you.
Nov 3 Remember my word: ‘No servant is greater than his master.’11 If they persecuted me, they’ll persecute you too. If they kept my teaching, they will keep yours. They will maltreat you for my name’s sake, because they don’t know12 the One who sent me. They wouldn’t be guilty had I not come and spoken to them. Now they have no excuse for their sin. He who hates me, also hates my Father. If I hadn’t done among them what none else had done, they wouldn’t be guilty of sin. Now they’ve seen my work, yet they hated my Father and me. This fulfills the scripture, ‘They hated me for no reason.’
When the Comforter13 whom I will send, the Spirit of truth proceeding from the Father, comes, He will testify about me. You too will testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.
Nov 4 I have told you this, so that you won’t fall. They will expel you from synagogues. At a time, they will kill you thinking they are serving God. They will do these things because they did not know the Father or me. When the time comes, you will remember that I warned you. I didn’t tell you earlier, because I was still with you.
Now I’m going to Him who sent me, yet you don’t ask ‘Where?’ Because of all I said, your heart is sorrowful. Truly, it is for your good that I leave. If I do not, the Comforter will not come. He who will convict the world about sin, righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they don’t believe in me; about righteousness, because I go to the Father and you see me no more; about judgment, because the prince of this world, Satan, is judged.14
Nov 5 I want to say many more things, but you can’t bear them now. But when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He won’t speak on His own but only what He hears,15 and He will announce future events. All the Father has is mine, which He, the Holy Spirit, will take and reveal to you, hence they are mine. In a little while I’ll be gone, but a little while after that, you’ll see me again.” Some disciples asked, “What is he saying? What is this about not seeing me for a while and then seeing me later, because I go to the Father?”
Nov 6 Jesus knew their intended16 question, so he said, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you won’t see me, and after a little while you will see me. Truly, I tell you, you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices. But soon your grief will turn to joy. A pregnant woman labors in pain, but forgets it in the joy of childbirth. So will your grief be turned to lasting joy. You won’t have any questions for me then. Truly, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now, you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be full.’
Nov 7 I’ve been speaking figuratively, but a time is coming when I’ll tell you plainly about my Father. In that day you will ask in my name. I’m not saying I will ask the Father on your behalf, for He loves you because you’ve loved me and have believed that I came from God into the world, then to return to Him again.”
His disciples said, “Now you speak plainly, and we can see you know all things and don’t need anyone to question you. So we believe that you came from God.”
Jesus answered, “You now believe! But a time is coming and is here for you to be scattered to your different homes deserting me. Yet I’m not alone, for the Father is with me. I’ve told you these things that in me you may have peace. In this world you have troubles. But cheer up! I have overcome the world.”
